RESTAURANT, REIS MAGOS “VOLTAIRE”
Existing warehouse was converted into a restaurant. A floor was added by creating a central courtyard such that the space does not feel constrained and creating a connection between the two levels. The wooden bay windows were created to house the upstairs seating overlooking the Mandovi River. The gesture of sitting in a bay window and the darkness created by the wood provides one a sense of intimacy which is nostalgic of an old Goan house. A waterbody occupies the centre of the courtyard holding the space together. A pattern of black and white cement tiles is created by carefully cutting each piece and laying them geometrically around the waterbody. The wooden roof structure, windows and all the furniture is built out of salvaged wood from the original warehouse.
